Hello everyone,
As this COVID-19 era is getting prolonged, the importance of being able to play music yourself is becoming bigger and bigger.
There is no way to enjoy live music unless you play it yourself, and I see more and more people start to really miss enjoying live music performances.
Here are 5 reasons why you should learn how to play music in 2020!
For the fun and fulfillment.
Learning to do something new is always fun.
However, learning how to play music has a quite rapid growth curve in the beginning, so it's extra super fun!! :) You can experience an instant feedback and result for your effort.
This also boosts your self-confidence and gives you a sense of fulfillment which we all need in times like this for our mental health.
2. Beauty
Learning music fills your life with more beauty.
Music is art. Music is beauty.
The more you practice, the more beautiful you will sound, and more beauty you will create.
Also, once you start learning an instrument, your interest in music increases which leads you to listen to more music which is absolutely beautiful, so your life just gets filled with beauty all around. :)
3. Outlet for emotions and creativity
Music is a healthy outlet for your emotions.
It's important especially in times like this when you are trapped at home with roommates or family members for so long. You have so much energy but so little outlet to resolve them.
Also it's a great tool for expressing your creativity. Humans are creative being. It's one of our fundamental yet highest desires and purposes. Having music available in your life for your creativity is one of the greatest blessings you can have.
4. Meditation
Playing music is a form of an active meditation.
In music practice, we experience this "flow" or "in the zone" state which clears out all the loud thoughts in our heads and minds and you experience just your own presence and music. For me, it feels like my conscious is just floating on the sound of music when I'm in that zone, and it's one of the best feelings ever!
I'm not a meditation guru, but I'm pretty sure that's exactly what meditation is about.
You will feel so great and calm after you finish this type of practice.
5. Connection
Playing music with others is an extremely special way to connect with other human beings.
I think it's at this golden spot in the middle of spiritual, emotional, and physical connection.
First, you have to be aurally connected with others in the group which is a physical connection. In addition to that, playing music together usually requires breathing and pulsing together as well- that's a physical connection at its fundamental level!
Secondly, everyone needs to be in the same realm of emotions in order to play the same piece together so that's an emotional connection you build.
Lastly, music IS spiritual itself, so when you make music together, you get in touch with your fellow musician's spirituality in a sense.
In this day and age, the need and importance of meaningful human connection are highly looked after. Although we cannot create collective/community/ensemble music playing opportunities at the moment, if you start learning the instrument you've always wanted to play, when we get through this time, you will be able to enjoy the opportunity to fulfill your thirst for the meaningful human connection by being in a music group!
I hope this post gave you conviction and encouragement to dive into your journey as a musician.
Start today! Think about what instrument you want to learn; see if there's a good teacher to connect with.
